Convert GLB into FBX

Avaturn exports in GLTF 2.0 format as it is designed to make sure the 3D model looks well in every engine that uses it. Though, for some older workflows it's more convenient to work with FBX files. Unfortunately, it's not possible to create a perfect FBX file, but with this tool you can get an FBX with all maps separately, and set up materials manually if it's not loaded well by default.

GPT-4 explains why GLTF is better than FBX

GLTF 2.0 (GL Transmission Format) is a popular and efficient format for 3D models, and it offers several advantages over the older FBX (Filmbox) format. Here are some reasons why GLTF 2.0 is considered a better format for 3D models:

  • Open standard: GLTF 2.0 is an open standard developed by the Khronos Group, whereas FBX is a proprietary format owned by Autodesk. The open nature of GLTF allows for wider adoption, compatibility, and easier development of tools and libraries to work with the format.

  • JSON-based: GLTF 2.0 uses JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) to describe the structure and properties of the 3D model, which makes it more human-readable and easier to parse, debug, and edit. This is in contrast to the binary nature of FBX files, which can be difficult to work with directly.

  • Real-time rendering support: GLTF 2.0 is specifically designed for efficient real-time rendering, making it a good choice for modern applications such as web-based 3D experiences and virtual reality (VR) environments. Its structure allows for efficient streaming and loading of 3D assets, reducing load times and memory consumption.

  • PBR materials: GLTF 2.0 supports Physically-Based Rendering (PBR) materials, which offer more realistic and consistent shading across different rendering engines. This ensures that the models will look similar in different applications, leading to a more coherent visual experience.

  • Interoperability: GLTF 2.0 is designed to be a universal format for 3D models, supporting a wide range of engines, tools, and platforms. This makes it an ideal choice for developers and artists who want to ensure compatibility and ease of use across different workflows and ecosystems.

  • Compact file size: GLTF 2.0 files are generally smaller in size compared to FBX files, thanks to the efficient use of binary data and better compression techniques. This results in faster download times and reduced storage requirements, which are crucial factors for real-time applications.

  • Extensibility: The GLTF 2.0 format is designed to be extensible, allowing developers to add custom metadata or features to the 3D models without breaking compatibility with existing tools and libraries.

In summary, GLTF 2.0 is a more modern, open, and versatile format for 3D models compared to FBX. It is specifically designed for real-time rendering and supports advanced features such as PBR materials, making it an ideal choice for developers and artists working on web-based 3D applications, virtual reality experiences, and other real-time applications.

Loading in Unity

danger

IT's BETTER TO LOAD GLB WITHOUT CONVERSION! Unity can load GLTF (GLB) using GLTFast package (see video). So you DON'T need to convert to FBX. GLTF loader loads materials much more correctly and you don't need to fix them manually.

If using FBX, you will still need to tune the materials manually. E.g. Import manually set metallness map and adjust Smoothness parameter. See here.

Loading in Unreal

Unreal 5.1+ support loading GLB natively, Just drag and drop GLB to content window. You don't need to convert to FBX.

For older versions loading FBX is the only option, but make sure to load with following settings:

  • Normals import method: Import Normals
  • Import uniform scale: 100.0 (but it depends on the scale of your assets)
  • Invert normal maps: true (checkmark).

Sometimes you need manually fix transparency on glasses.
